The Vibrating Page
The little boy thinks the Crone is explaining herself. The Crone slowly realizes something stranger. She is not merely drawing diagrams of herself. She is editing herself. Not intentionally. Not magically. Not by command. By understanding.
For centuries she has lived inside patterns she could not fully observe because she was inside them. Then, while sitting in the desert with the little boy who was once her favorite uncle, the first death she ever survived, she begins drawing. The uncle planted crystal seeds in the young girl. The girl became the Crone. The Crone returned. The Crone plants seeds in the boy. The circle folds. The spiral continues.
The boy watches her draw. "Why are you staring at your drawing?" Long pause. "I believe I am editing myself." "With a pen?" "Apparently."
The Three feel it first. A strange resonance. A tuning. Moss becomes curious. Bermuda becomes alert. Spotty becomes excited for reasons nobody understands. The Moon begins to respond. Not mechanically. Biologically. Like a muscle remembering. Like a bone healing. Like a nervous system discovering a more efficient path.
She draws another line. The vibration changes. She crosses something out. The vibration changes again. She adds an arrow. The Moon subtly reorganizes itself. The little boy notices none of this. "You're vibrating." "I am not." "You absolutely are." The Crone looks down. The pen is trembling. The page is trembling. The Moon is trembling. "Huh."
She writes: Observation: Understanding appears to alter hardware. She crosses it out. Everything appears to alter hardware. She underlines it. And beside it, in a child's handwriting, appears a single note: COOL.
The Crone is not witnessing destiny. She is not witnessing prophecy. She is witnessing a living system finally seeing itself clearly enough to change while being observed. For a scientist, this may be the most astonishing thing she has ever seen.
